Nottingham Rugby Club start crowdfunding to raise £50,000 after their ground is devastated by flooding… with team forced to postpone Friday’s fixture as water still covers the pitch after DAYS of work

Nottingham Rugby Club have launched an urgent crowd-funding campaign in an attempt to raise £50,000 after their Lady Bay ground was flooded, causing devastating damage.

The Championship club have already been forced to postpone Friday’s home fixture against London Scottish as water is still covering part of the pitch, despite days of frantic work to alleviate the critical situation.

As their home is situated on a flood plain, the Archers cannot hope to cover costs through their insurance, which is why they have been forced to set up a Just Giving page and appeal for help.

A surge of assistance from locals and the wider English rugby community has meant Nottingham are already a third of the way towards their fund-raising target, but they are desperate to secure more financial support for a clean-up operation, against the clock.

Firstly, they need to finish pumping water off the pitch and surrounds, before beginning the arduous, expensive task of sanitising the whole area, to avert the risk of infection, in case any sewage water has caused contamination.

At a time of financial strain across the second tier of the domestic game, this has been a savage setback for the East Midlands club who have had a role in developing so many past and present England players.

They have received personnel and logistical back-up from Nottingham Forest, Notts County and Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club, but now face a rush to ensure the playing surface can be used again, safely – along with the spectator facilities.

Flood water swamped the marquee and bar area at Lady Bay, which are such vital elements for driving match-day revenue.

The hope is to complete the clean-up in time for the scheduled fixture against the British Army on January 26, ahead of the anticipated friendly visit of nearby Leicester on February 9, when the Archers – currently fifth in the Championship – hope to break their home attendance record.

Despite being close to the Trent, there has not been a flood at Lady Bay for 25 years. Part of the aim of the crowd-funding is to put measures in place to guard against a similar episode in the future – such as enhanced protocols for wet weather and improved flood defences.
