Bournemouth in talks with Tottenham over out-of-favour defender8 July 2022
Newly-promoted Bournemouth are in talks with Tottenham over out-of-favour defender Japhet Tanganga, with both a loan and permanent deal potentially on the table this summer.
Tanganga made just 11 appearances in the Premier League last season for the Lilywhites, but a serious injury left him sidelined for much of the season and seems out of Antonio Conte’s current plans for the Tottenham side.
As it stands, Tanganga is a valuable player for Tottenham by virtue of his age and home-grown status, but the Athletic report that he could well be heading to the Vitality Stadium this summer, either on loan or on a permanent deal.
There is also interest from Serie A, with Roma and Napoli both thought to be keen on landing the Spurs defender, and with the addition of Clement Lenglet and potentially another defender in north London, Tanganga continues to fall down the pecking order.
A move to Bournemouth would certainly allow him the chance for regular first-team football, something that looks unlikely under Conte even with Tottenham having added football to play this season.
Homegrown issues at Spurs?
Should Tanganga depart, along with a potential departure for Joe Rodon, Tottenham could be forced back into the market for additional homegrown players, with Harry Winks also expected to depart.
This would leave the Lilywhites with just seven senior homegrown players in their first-team squad, one fewer than the minimum required by Premier League regulations, while they could run into further problems when it comes to naming their Champions League squad.
However, the sale of the likes of Tanganga, Rodon and Winks could yet raise some key funds for Conte’s attempted rebuild.
