After qualifying by the skin of their teeth, will Switzerland make a serious impact at these European Championships?

La Nati missed out on automatic qualification, finishing second in their group behind Belgium, so entered the play-offs in April last year.

There, both legs of their clash with Czech Republic ended 1-1, meaning a penalty shootout was required in Thun.

When Malin Gut and Coumba Sow both missed the Swiss’ first two spot-kicks, their dream looked to be over.

However, Alisha Lehmann, Lia Wälti and Ana-Maria Crnogorčević all then converted as they snuck through by the finest of margins.

So, this’ll be Switzerland’s third major tournament appearance with this one set to follow the same pattern.

At World Cup 2015, they won once, hammering Ecuador 10-1, before bowing out against hosts Canada in the round of 16.

Two years later, a victory over Iceland wasn’t enough as they exited Euro 2017 at the group phase.

This summer, with outsiders Portugal as well as heavyweights Netherlands and Sweden in Group C, one win could be the height of their aspirations again.

Back in April, Nils Nielsen’s side were beaten 1-0 by Italy, thereby pretty much ending their automatic World Cup qualification hopes.

They do still have October’s play-off competition to look forward to.

In all, Switzerland are far from a bad team just, with Netherlands and Sweden in their section, knockout phase football seems unlikely.

If they’re to have any chance, the group opener against Portugal at Leigh Sports Village is simply must win.

Key players: Ana-Maria Crnogorčević

Despite the fact she wears number nine, don’t be fooled, Ana-Maria Crnogorčević doesn’t play as a centre-forward, at least not all of the time.

Uniquely, the 31 year old usually plays as a right-wing-back, but has also led the attack on occasion.

The latter has helped her score a whopping 67 international goals coming from 133 caps, including six during the ongoing World Cup qualifiers.

At club level, she’s now won major honours with FC Rot-Schwarz Thun, FFC Frankfurt, and current employers Barcelona.

After two years State-side with Portland Thorns, Crnogorčević returned to Europe, joining Barça in 2019.

With the Catalan giants, she’s accumulated nine winners medals, coming off the bench in the Champions League Final victory of 2021.

In May’s final defeat to Olympique Lyonnais, she was a substitute again, coming on at full-back as her team were beaten 3-1.

Right-wing-back seems to be her most likely position at this tournament too, although Crnogorčević is versatile as well as being a high-quality operator.

Key players: Lia Wälti

The captain and midfield general of this Swiss side is Arsenal’s Lia Wälti.

The 29 year old currently has 98 caps to her name, so will be expecting to surpass the 100 mark during the group stages.

Wälti has also started all seven matches Switzerland have ever played at major tournaments, a streak she’ll be seeking to extend to ten or maybe even more.

Five of these matches have been as a centre-back but, since moving to Arsenal in 2018, she’s more frequently been deployed in midfield.

With the Gunners, she won the FAWSL title in 2019, featuring in 31 of their 33 matches this season.

The fact that Wälti has only scored five international goals, and has never scored in the WSL, highlights was type of midfielder she is.

If Switzerland are to pip either Sweden or Netherlands to a top two finish, they’ll need their captain to be on top form.

Key players: Ramona Bachmann

Assuming the aforementioned Crnogorčević is utilised out-wide, Ramona Bachmann will be the one leading the line.

To date, the striker has scored an impressive 53 goals for her country, including a hat-trick against Ecuador at the World Cup seven summers ago.

Two years later, Bachmann bagged the go-ahead goal as Switzerland won a Euros match for the very first time, beating Iceland in Doetinchem.

The 31 year also boasts serious pedigree at club level, winning trophies with Rosengård, VfL Wolfsburg, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain.

This season though, she only scored seven times for les Parisiennes, although four of these were in the Champions League as they reached the semis.

Nevertheless, Bachmann is this team’s best attacker and she’ll fancy her chances of scoring at a third major tournament.
