Haydon Roberts: West Brom goal is ‘most important of career’

Roberts, who typically plays at left-back or the left side of midfield, joined Bristol City in June 2023 from Brighton and has made 54 appearances for the club, including 26 this season so far.

Tuesday’s goal was his first at home and only his second for the club, with his first coming away at Norwich in April last year.

“I owe my team-mates, I owe everyone a goal really. It’s been nearly over a year,” Roberts said.

“I don’t think my performances have been too great but I’m just happy that I can give this moment to everyone at the club.”

Roberts, who has also played at Derby, added that the team know they could create something “special” this season, with the club not finishing in the play-offs since the 2007-08 campaign.

“There is something really special that we can create, you saw the celebrations after the goal, after the full-time whistle,” Roberts said.

“There’s such a connection between the players and staff and the supporters, I haven’t experienced anything like that in my career so far.

“The boys and the staff have done well just to approach every game step-by-step. It’s cliche but that’s how we’ve been taking it and that’s a massive strength of ours.

“We’re not stupid, we know the situation we’re in, what we can create this season – it’s exciting.”
