William Saliba (Arsenal), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa) and Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool): Three exceptional centre-backs and leaders – it’s not necessarily about picking captains but figureheads from a defensive point of view. The team will only be as good as these three guys defend. Van Dijk obviously won the league, and signed a new Liverpool deal. In my opinion, he’s the best centre-back in world football. Konsa is growing

All of my midfielders scored but I’m not putting them in for their goals, I’m putting them in for their all-round play.

Tomas Soucek (West Ham): Sometimes you watch games and guys just stand out on the pitch. Whenever you watch West Ham, Soucek is one of those guys who stands out.

He has a solid defensive framework. He heads it, kicks it, tackles. Offensively he’s a threat as well.

Enzo Fernandez (Chelsea) and Youri Tielemans (Aston Villa): These two are on a similar trajectory. Really impressive performance: box to box, combative and they did everything they needed to do. Tielemans has been great for Villa and now Villa are trying to work out who fits in around him. Before it was chopping and changing – was it Amadou Onana, was it John McGinn? Now it’s Tielemans and whoever. Fernandez

Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace): He came back into the Palace team and was excellent, strong and powerful against Bournemouth. When they went down to 10 men he was key in securing a clean sheet.

William Saliba (Arsenal): There’s not much more we can say about him. Arsenal cruised to a 4-0 win at Ipswich and he never looked flustered. He’s closing in on being as good as Virgil van Dijk.

Sandro Tonali (Newcastle): Since he has come back from his ban, the Italian has been frightening. He has been looking like one of the best midfielders in European football. He has everything to his game – he can run, can score, can tackle and his run and finish for the goal was excellent against Manchester United.

Tyler Adams (Bournemouth): This is someone who won’t get a lot of credit

Youri Tielemans (Aston Villa): He’s become undroppable for Villa, excellent. He had a year last year where you thought maybe they needed to move on and get someone better, but this year he’s gone from strength to strength and has become a key component. Him and Boubacar Kamara, who was rested at the weekend, have built a massive presence of quality, tough tackling and reliability that Villa have built a

Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa): He has grown from strength to strength and become one of the best centre-backs in English football. This is really hard to say because I am a Birmingham fan and he is a Villa player, but he has been exceptional.

Murillo (Nottingham Forest): He was a monster for Nottingham Forest, an absolute powerhouse. He loves defending and you have seen that with his last-second clearance

Jake O’Brien (Everton): He doesn’t get much credit but, for a young man to go in at Everton, having never played much under Sean Dyche and then deliver the performances he has been doing week in and week out has been excellent. He gets the equaliser, which was huge for him and for Everton and keeps their unbeaten run going.

Matthijs de Ligt (Manchester United): Growing more and more as

Declan Rice (Arsenal): People gave him stick for celebrating his equaliser against Manchester United. When he doesn’t score people say he doesn’t score enough – but when he does he gets stick for celebrating! He is growing into a really talented ‘number eight’. Especially as Arsenal don’t have a number nine, he runs into great pockets and got beyond the attackers for his goal.

Bruno Guimaraes (Newcastle): Scored the only

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool): This is the first time you’re going to hear me say this and probably the last. I was at the game and I would pay a huge amount of money to watch that. He was incredible: passing range, fitness, endeavour, defensive work as well as attacking work. He hit the bar. I thought he was excellent. Player of the weekend by a country mile.
