Welbeck, 35, was tidy in possession but, with little service, managed only 17 touches before being substituted in the 71st minute.

Unlike Joao Pedro, who is capable of creating chances for himself, Welbeck found it difficult to influence the game in the same way.

James McAtee (Nottingham Forest): He absolutely ran the game at Anfield from start to finish. Getting on the ball in the pockets, half-turn, playing forward. He was the reason they were any good, and he’s very, very good, but won’t be spoken about in the same breath as the goalscorers.

Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United): There’s not much more to say. Captain Fantastic, three goals, an assist, and nearly scored from

Marc Guehi (Man City): I’ll have Guehi in as my holding midfielder. He should have scored two against Bournemouth because he missed a massive chance before he ended up scoring. But he got the equaliser and offered a lot more of a calming presence than City’s £116m record signing Elliot Anderson – Guehi controlled the game a little bit more.

Vitaly Janelt (Brentford): He is one of
