Portsmouth took the lead on 15 minutes, Jordan Williams cut in on his left to whip in a deep cross, which Bishop met with an low, well-directed header.

But just six minutes later, Sargent restored parity for Norwich, smashing home after a corner was cleared into his path.

The tempo of the game was relentless, and Norwich almost went in front 10 minutes before half time. Kellen Fisher headed goalwards from Oscar Shwartau’s cross, but Pompey keeper Nicolas Schmid saved with his feet.

Ritchie finished off a wonderful team goal for the visitors moments later as Josh Murphy reached the byline after a searching ball from Isaac Hayden, before crossing for the 35-year-old to tap home unmarked.

Bishop scored his second from a stoppage time penalty after Hayden was fouled in the box, and they picked up where they left off after the break.

Murphy shot from a tight angle before feeding the striker, who finished after George Long’s initial save.

Stacey pulled one back for Norwich with a brilliant finish into the top corner after being fed by Jacob Wright’s pinpoint through ball.

But Pompey restored their three-goal advantage through Poole’s sweeping finish from Adil Aouchiche’s cross.

Marcondes added Norwich’s third late on but it was too late to avoid a fourth straight game without a win.
